What Are the Differences Between Flamed and Polished Granite?

If you visit a stone factory in Fujian, Shandong, or another granite production area in China, you will often see the same granite finished in two very different ways. One slab may look smooth and reflective. Another may feel rough under your hand.

These are polished granite and flamed granite.

We work with both finishes in monuments, paving, stairs, wall cladding, garden stone, and commercial projects. The stone may come from the same block, but the final look, texture, and use can be very different.

So, what is the real diference between flamed and polished granite?

What Is Polished Granite?

Polished granite has a smooth, glossy surface.

During production, the stone passes through several grinding and polishing stages. Diamond abrasives move from coarse grades to finer grades until the surace becomes smooth and reflective.

In many Chinese stone factories, automatic polishing lines are used for large slabs. Smaller pieces may also be finished by hand.

A polished finish makes the granite colour look deeper.

For example, polished Shanxi Black or India Black granite usually appears darker and richer than the same stone with a rough finish.

This is one reason polished granite is common for:

A customer from Australia once ordered black granite memorial panels from us. He first considered a honed finish, but after comparing samples, he chose polished granite because the lettering and engraved photos had stronger contrast.

That kind of decision is quite common in the monument business.

What Is Flamed Granite?

Flamed granite is produced by exposing the stone surface to very high temperture.

A flame torch heats the minerals on the surface. Because different minerals react to heat at different rates, tiny particles break away. This creates a rough and natural texture.

The process does not change the full stone structure. It mainly changes the top layer.

Flamed granite is common for:

• Outdoor paving
• Steps
• Public squares
• Garden paths
• Pool areas
• Exterior landscaping
• Some comercial building projects

The biggest advantage is grip.

A rough flamed surface gives shoes more contact with the stone. For outdoor areas exposed to rain, this can be useful.

That is why many contractors prefer flamed granite for stairs and paving instead of highly polished stone, which may become more slipery when wet.

Appearance: Glossy or Natural?

This is usually the first thing buyers notice.

Polished granite has a clean, formal and refined apperance.

It reflects light and highlights the mineral pattern inside the stone.

Flamed granite looks softer, rougher and more natural. The colour often appears lighter because the surface does not reflect light in the same way.

This sometimes surprises new buyers.

The stone has not changed. Only the finish has.

Which Finish Is Easier to Maintain?

Polished granite is easier to wipe clean because the surface is smooth.

Dust, dirt and stains have fewer rough areas to sit in.

Flamed granite has a textured surface, so outdoor dirt can settle in the small pits. Cleaning may require a brush or pressure washing depending on the project.

Still, granite itself has good durablity.

Most commercial granite used for construction contains large amounts of quartz and feldspar. Quartz has a Mohs hardness of about 7, which helps explain why granite performs well in many high-use areas.

For normal outdoor stone projects, good maintenace matters as much as the finish itself.

Flamed vs Polished Granite for Outdoor Use

For most outdoor walking areas, we usually recomend a rough finish such as flamed, bush-hammered or sandblasted granite.

Why?

The main reason is slip resistance.

For large B2B projects, architects or contractors may request test reports based on standards such as ASTM or local building codes.

The exact result depends on the granite type and finishing method.

For decorative outdoor walls, however, polished granite can still be used because people are not walking on it.

This is why the application matters more than simply asking which finish is “better.”

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose polished granite when you want:

A smooth finish, deeper colour, easy cleaning and a more formal appearance.

Choose flamed granite when you want:

A natural texture, better grip and a surface suited to outdoor paving or steps.

Neither finish is better in every situation.

We have seen customers choose polished granite because it looked beautiful in a sample room, then change to flamed granite after thinking about rain, foot traffic and outdoor use.

That is why we always suggest looking at the real project first.

The right granite finish is not only about appearance. It should match the place, the weather, the way people use the stone and the expected service life.

For stone buyers, distributors and contractors, choosing the finish at the beginning can also reduce mistakes, rework and unnecessary cost later.
