Can I Create My Own Headstone?
Yes, you can. Many people think a headstone must come from a cemetery catalogue. But that’s not always the case. You can design your own headstone, choose the granite, decide the shape, and add something that reminds you of your loved one.
We’ve been working with granite monuments in China for many years. To be fair, most customers aren’t professional designers. Some send us a hand drawing. Others just show us a photo and say, “Can you make something like this, but a little different?”
That’s how many custom headstone orders begin.

You Don’t Need a Professional Design
One thing we’ve learned in our factory is that customers often worry too much about their drawings.
A customer once wanted a heart-shaped headstone for his parents. He sent a simple pencil sketch with the names and dates written beside it. The drawing wasn’t perfect, but we understood what he wanted.
Our workers prepared a CAD drawing with the correct measurments in cm and mm. After a few small changes, the customer approved it.
So don’t worry if your desgin isn’t professional. A clear idea is a good start.
Choose Granite That Works for Your Design
In China, we process different kinds of granite for customers in Europe, America, and Australia.
Black granite is popular for portraits and lettering. Grey granite is often used for traditional monuments. Red and pink granite can also make a beautiful memorial.
But here’s something worth knowing.
Not every materal works well for every carving. Some granite has large mineral grains, which can make very fine details harder to produce.
For example, if you want a detailed portrait, we may suggest polished black granite rather than a coarse-grained grey stone.
It’s not just about the colour. The stone needs to match the engraving method.
Check Cemetery Rules Before Making Anything
This is something we remind customers about quite often.
A cemetry may have its own rules for monument size, thickness, foundation, and installation.
We’ve seen customers choose a beautiful monument, only to find that it’s too wide for the grave space.
Before making your headstone, ask the cemetery about the allowed dimensions and materials.
A few minutes checking these details can prevent a costly mistake later.
How Do We Make a Custom Headstone in China?
In our factory, the process is quite straightforward.
First, we discuss the shape, granite type, size, and carving details. Then we prepare the production drawing for approval.
Once everything is confirmed, our workers cut the stone, shape the edges, polish the surfaces, and complete the lettering or carving.
We use CNC equipment for some cutting and shaping work. Hand carving is still important for certain flowers, angels, and other detailed designs.
Our QC workers check the stone during production. We also send photos to customers before packing.
For overseas buyers, we discuss FOB, CIF, MOQ, CBM, and shipment ETA when preparing the order.
Good packing matters too. A finished headstone is heavy, and damaged corners are difficult to repair after delivery.
Can You Add Your Own Words or Decorations?
Of course.
Some customers want flowers or crosses. Others prefer birds, trees, or simple family messages.
One familly wanted a small carved rose beside their mother’s name because she loved gardening.
It wasn’t a complicated design. But that little rose meant more to them than a large decoraton.
We always suggest checking the spelling of names, birth dates, and inscriptions before the engraving starts. These details are easy to change on paper, but not on finished stone.
Is Making Your Own Headstone Worth It?
We think it is, especially when you have a particular memory or idea you want to preserve.
You don’t need an expensive or complicated monument. A simple granite headstone, made with the right size, good polishing, and a meaningful inscription, can last for generations.
From our experience, the most personlized headstones aren’t always the largest ones.
Sometimes, a small flower, a familiar shape, or a few carefully chosen words are enough.
After all, a headstone isn’t just another piece of granite. It’s something a family will come back to visit for many years.
